For the first time in my live I've won the football pool at the office beating all my fellow workers. Now your initial reaction should be: not bad for a Dutch guy! But I have to admit it had nothing to do with skill and everything with luck. Unlike soccer where you put money on a score like 2-1 or 3-1. For american football, with 6 points for a touchdown, 3 for a field goal, 2 for a safety and 1 for the conversion, it is impossible to pick a score. So there is this grid of 10 by 10 boxes. You pick 5 boxes for $20 and then after all the boxes are sold they draw numbers (0-9) for each row and column. So for one of my boxes I got a 4 for the Patriots and a 7 for the Giants. So I won with the final score of 17-14 (2 touchdowns, 2 one-point conversions and a fieldgoal). But I also would have won with 27-24.
So yes absolutely lucky. Then again I just missed out on winning the baby pool. I was right (two girls) but somebody else had the lucky draw.
